The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Zambia Country Office seeks to recruit a proficient and self-motivated individual in the position Climate Change Adaptation and Resilience Officer to be based in Sesheke District.

Guided by our vision of ensuring that the environment, natural resources and biodiversity in Zambia are secured and sustainably managed for people and nature, the mission of the WWF Zambia is to lead the development and delivery of WWF Zambia’s Four Conservation Goals related to People, Wildlife, Forests and Freshwater.

Major Function

Reporting to the Project Coordinator, He/ She will have delegated duties for co-ordination of field activities and organization of meetings and workshops and will provide the Project Coordinator with reports on field activities mandated by the project.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

His/Her specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  1. Coordinate and provide technical support on WWF climate smart agriculture and other climate change adaptation interventions in the Silowana Complex to build resilience in target project communities
  2. Liaise and build relationships with local stakeholders in Government, NGO’s and CSO’s to develop and share latest thinking on adaptation tools, methods and frameworks and identify synergies for possible collaborations in implementation
  3. Oversee monitoring and evaluation of the progress and impact of WWF’s conservation agriculture and climate adaptation interventions in the Silowana Complex to maintain high quality of project implementation delivery
  4. Provide input and technical support in developing innovative best practices for mainstreaming climate change adaptation in WWF project and programme activities in the Zambian side of KAZA
  5. Provide technical support in assessing climate change vulnerabilities to local livelihoods and livelihood assets, and identify capacity development needs of local communities and relevant stakeholders to implement potential climate adaptation responses
  6. Conduct capacity building trainings and workshops for Community Resource Boards, project and local district agricultural extension officers and other key stakeholders in climate change adaptation and sustainability
  7. Support the CCCDP project coordinator and climate change adaptation coordinator to ensure relevant evidence from lessons learned in projects in the Silowana Complex is incorporated into WWF Zambia’s position and strategic planning on climate change adaptation
  8. Prepare reports, technical papers and awareness material related to WWF’s climate adaptation efforts in the Silowana Complex through literature review, research and results from program activities
  9. Provide support to the coordinator for the development of fundraising or funding opportunities around WWF’s work on conservation agriculture and climate change adaptation
  10. Provide expert knowledge in the development and dissemination of knowledge and awareness materials on climate adaptation best practices in the Silowana Complex
  11. He/she will be assigned any other appropriate responsibility as need may arise during the implementation of the project by other senior project staff and consortium through the Project Coordinator.
  12. He/She needs to alert the Project Coordinator immediately of any problems or complications that may arise in the implementation of the project in the community.

Working Relationships

Internal: Works closely with Programme and Project Managers and coordinators, both in Lusaka and in the field. Interacts with other WWF programmes and project managers in the region.

External: Interacts with communities, Community Resource Boards, Barotse Royal Establishment, government departments, and conservation partners.

Profile

Qualifications

  • Degree or Diploma in the field of Climate Change, Agriculture, Nature Conservation, Water Resources Management, or Environmental management.

Knowledge and Experience

  • A minimum of two years’ experience working in the area of climate change adaptation in an INGO or development agency,
  • Strong understanding of how agriculture, livestock, and natural resource management fits within the wider framework of promoting resilience and positive climate change adaptation, particularly in drought-prone contexts.
  • At least 2 years of practical experience of community work, working with CBO, community development, project cycle management, and climate change adaptation and resilience.
  • Experience in working in a remote setting, basic facilities and infrastructure and with a high level of independency;
  • Good understanding  of  current  debates  and  initiatives  in  global  climate  change  adaptation discussions, including climate finance and technology transfer;
  • Good understanding and experience working on nutrition-sensitive agriculture interventions and approaches.
  • A good understanding of gender issues in relation to agriculture and livelihoods programmes and practical ways to promote gender equality within them;

Skills and Competencies

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work well as part of a multi-disciplinary team;
  • Excellent communication skills in English – including writing, speaking and listening;
  • Speaking Lozi would be a strong asset;
  • Experience working in an international context and the ability to respect and work well with people from different cultures and backgrounds;
  • Must be a self-motivated individual who can work with minimum direct supervision;
  • Accountability and a commitment to WWF’s mission.
