CAREER OPPORTUNITY
The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is the implementing agency of the Federal Republic of Germany for technical and international cooperation. It offers flexible, sustainable and effective solutions in political, economic and social change processes. Most of the work of GIZ is commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). GIZ also operates on behalf of other German Ministries as well as public and private bodies in Germany and abroad. These include the European Commission, the United Nations, the World Bank and governments of other countries.
In 2014 BMZ has initiated the special initiative “ONE WORLD – NO HUNGER” (SEWOH) aimed at reducing hunger and malnutrition in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In Zambia GIZ projects of the SEWOH initiative are clustered under the heading of the Agriculture and Food Security Programme (AgriFood). Within the AgriFood programme the Food and Nutrition Security, Enhanced Resilience (FANSER) Project aims to improve the nutritional situation of Zambians at risk of food and nutrition insecurity, targeting 110,000 women of child-bearing age and 64,000 young children in selected districts in Luapula and Eastern Province corresponding to the Zambian MCDP minimum service package.
The project operates in five action areas:
(1) Increase knowledge about nutrition, change attitudes positively; (2) Increase knowledge about hygiene, change attitudes positively; (3) Increasing the year-round availability of nutrient-rich foods / nutrition-sensitive agriculture; (4) Households have developed strategies to manage their household and productive resources and (5) Strengthening nutrition governance at the district, provincial and national level. The project works together with various public and private implementing partners.
Key elements of the project address the availability of nutritious crops and the economic dimension of agriculture by the improving the agro-economic competences of its target group through offering tailor-made trainings and extension services such as the Lead Farmer Approach and Farmer Business Schools to improve the financial literacy and household planning skills of small-scale farming households.
In this context, the project is seeking a suitable candidate for the following position:
Junior Advisor – Nutrition-Sensitive Agriculture (based in Kawambwa, Luapula Province)

Main tasks and responsibilities:
- Assisting the project Advisors/Regional Coordinator with the design, implementation, monitoring of project activities and knowledge management in nutrition-sensitive agriculture in Kawambwa, Mwense and Mwansabombwe districts
- Assisting the Advisors/Regional Coordinator in activities with regard to the Farmer Business School approach and other agriculture related activities in Kawambwa, Mwense and Mwansabombwe districts
- Supporting the development, organisation and facilitation of training of Intermediaries/Beneficiaries in nutrition-sensitive agriculture, including monitoring and occasionally also regarding the Farmer Business School approach within the targeted districts
- Maintaining up-to-date data and statistics on the number of Intermediaries and Beneficiary households in nutrition-sensitive-agriculture, while working in collaboration with the Monitoring and Evaluation team.
- Participating in additional activities to support the FANSER project implementation and collaboration with other projects in the Agri-food cluster
Technical support
- Assisting the advisors/regional coordinator with the design and effective implementation of nutrition-sensitive agriculture activities, especially under the Local Subsidy agreement with the Departments of Agriculture in the Districts
- Supporting the advisors in the preparation, monitoring and documentation of handing over processes, e.g. handover of bicycles and seed distribution to intermediaries and beneficiaries
- Supporting the preparation, facilitation and coordination of training, events, workshops, missions and other interventions of the FANSER project.
- Assisting with the development of realistic project work plans
- Monitoring activities and quality control of implementation (i.e. training, extension activities, etc.) at Intermediary and Beneficiary level
- Occasionally supporting the advisors with the preparation, implementation and monitoring of training activities with regard to the Farmer Business School approach
- Assisting the Project Team in all areas of interventions, including the preparations of training, workshops, report writing and logistical support during events
- Providing support to advisors/regional coordinator in strengthening and maintaining the project network of all stakeholders involved in nutrition-sensitive agriculture, Farmer Business School research institutions and other key stakeholders
- Assisting the regional coordinator/advisors with all project management related tasks, including administrative and logistical processes in line with GIZ guidelines
Support with Intermediary and Beneficiary training
- Assisting with capacity building needs assessments, setting goals, objectives and developing content of training packages
- Assisting with the preparation, facilitation and monitoring of training activities on nutrition-sensitive agriculture within project operational areas/communities.
- Making follow-ups, back-stopping and monitoring visits to intermediaries and beneficiary households after training
- Collaborating closely with advisors and technical partners such as the Ministry of Agriculture and supporting the coordination with the implementing partner Catholic Relief Service (CRS) and other implementing partners, with research institutions and other key players
Knowledge management, M&E and communication
- Assisting with the monitoring, documentation and evaluation of trainings/workshops
- Supporting the preparation and implementation of learning events
- Advising the regional coordinator and advisors on any challenges and recommending viable solutions that can be easily adopted
- Identifying and documenting good, innovative practices and lessons learnt
- Contributing to the preparation of periodic reports; producing and keeping photographic reports
- Supporting the organisation of exchange visits among intermediaries and beneficiary households to enhance the sharing of knowledge and skills among peers
- Assisting the project intermediaries with writing reports and record keeping
Other duties/additional tasks
- Supporting the preparation of any other events
- Supporting administrative processes, e.g. procurement
- Supporting the creation of a database of images/videos of major project activities
- Assisting with and/or carrying out other programme activities and tasks at the request of the programme management
Qualifications and requirements:
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture or Nutrition or a similar field
Professional experience:
- At least 1 year’s professional experience (may include internships, volunteering) in the field of nutrition- sensitive agriculture, rural development or related fields.
- Experience in the organisation of events and good networking skills is an added advantage
Other knowledge, additional competences:
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and be able to work effectively in a multicultural and multidisciplinary team
- Good knowledge about food security and nutrition strategies, including MCDP II and SUN is an added advantage
- Fluent written and oral knowledge of English; fluency in Bemba is essential
- Good knowledge of ICT (e.g. Internet, email, etc.) and computer applications (MS Office Suite, especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; online research); ability to learn new tools is an added advantage
- Ability to work independently, effectively and must be target-oriented
- Strong analytical skills
- Willingness to learn skills as required by the tasks to be performed in agreement with management
- Experience and willingness in riding a motorbike and/or vehicle; possession of a valid class A and B (no restrictions) SADC riding/driving licence is an added advantage
