Department Overview EYP 1
USAID-funded Empowered Youth Project I (EYP) will accelerate and sustain HIV epidemic control in Zambia through the delivery of high-impact HIV prevention, care and support services to Vulnerable Children and Adolescents (VCA) and their families. The goal of the project is to mitigate the impact of HIV and improve the health and wellbeing of VCA through the delivery of high-impact, evidence-informed, and age-appropriate interventions customized for each VCA sub-population using a family-centered approach. It also seeks to improve the social and health outcomes of vulnerable households in high HIV burden districts across two provinces of Zambia (Copperbelt and North-Western) in close collaboration with the Government of the Republic of Zambia (GRZ).
Position Summary
The Psychosocial Support Specialist will oversee the development and implementation of effective psychosocial support (PSS) services in the USAID Empowered Youth Project I (EYP), ensuring that these services respond to the needs of the intended beneficiaries and project objectives. This includes coordination and provision of TA related to all psychosocial support activities, including the training and mentoring of community case workers, and training schoolteachers in Psychosocial counselling in the provision of psychosocial support and care for vulnerable children and adolescents (VCA) and their families.
Job Responsibilities
- Identify and develop appropriately supervised approaches for providing PSS services to project beneficiaries, including those who are HIV-positive or living in HIV-affected households, by professional and lay service (community case workers) providers, and including through referral or direct service delivery through local implementing partners.
- Adapt best practices in the provision of PSS services to HIV-infected and HIV-affected individuals to meet the particular context of the EYP project’s target population within the comprehensive package of services for VCA, and ensure alignment with evidence-based recommendations from PEPFAR on psychosocial care and support programming for VCA
- Provide technical assistance and capacity building in line with identified needs for the provision of high quality PSS services.
- Provide technical input into adaptation of parenting training modules that aim to address the PSS needs of HIV-infected children and adolescents and their caregivers, Monitor, evaluate and refine PSS services provided or facilitated through the project to ensure they are meeting the needs of project beneficiaries and in line with project objectives.
- Develop and maintain strong and collaborative working relationships with implementing partners, government agencies, service providers, and other stakeholders to ensure the achievement of the project’s PSS objectives and targets.
- Participate in the assessment, strengthening, and monitoring of technical capacities of consortium and local partners related to PSS.
- Participate in the development of project work plans, reports, success stories, or other products related to the provision of and results achieved in PSS
- Perform other duties as requested.
Basic Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in clinical psychology or social work, or other social science or field of study related to the program scope of work required.
- At least five (5) years of experience with community-based programs focused on the PSS needs of children, adolescents, and underserved populations, including those affected by HIV.
- Familiarity with the health context and structural issues in Zambia.
- Fluency in English and other local languages
- Experience implementing USAID and/or PEPFAR-funded health programming.
- Prior experience working in similar role required.
- Ability to communicate (verbally and in writing) technical issues effectively and persuasively.
- Demonstrated written, presentation, and communication skills in English
- Ability to respond to multiple priorities in a timely manner, producing high-quality outcomes.
- Ability to travel to the field at 50%-60% of LOE
