Details of Chemonics International Vacancy Positions & How to Apply.

Chemonics International Inc., a US-based international development consulting firm, is currently seeking applications for a Communications Specialist to propose for an upcoming 5-year USAID-funded Zambia Alternatives to Charcoal (A2C) project. This activity will focus on sustainable forest management and alternative energy sources to increase forest cover, reduce land-based greenhouse gas emissions, increase private sector engagement, and enhance livelihoods. We are looking for individuals that have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world.

The Communications Specialist will report to the Director of Collaboration, Learning, and Adaptation (CLA) and will be responsible for developing and maintaining positive relationships with clients, consultants, collaborators, co-workers, field sites, and funders. The job requires knowledge of and adherence to Chemonics and USAID policies & procedures. As an advisor to senior project management, the A2C Communications Specialist will be responsible for the development and implementation of a communications strategy and plan on the transition to alternative energy sources, with input from the technical leads. Zambian nationals are strongly encouraged to apply. The position is contingent upon contract award.

Primary Functions:

  • Directs major communications initiatives; directs design and development of publication or production projects
  • Keeps abreast of innovations in communications, including methods, techniques, applications, and multi-media inventions
  • Assists technical staff in the production of teaching and learning materials
  • Responsible for all project contractual and technical communications
  • Oversees relations with printers, publishers, designers, and other vendors, supervising quality; oversees coordination of outsourced services in coordination with the operations staff
  • Collaborates with the A2C Managing Director and Director of CLA to understand project goals & specifications, coordinate activities, establish production schedules, solve publication problems and make improvements
  • Develops and updates project fact sheets
  • Consults on editorial revisions
  • Interviews individuals or attends meetings to obtain items or clarify information for inclusion and verify facts; researches or seeks technical advice
  • Advises finance team on communications initiative budgets
  • Oversees production schedules
  • Confers on project communications policy and changing needs
  • Counsels and coaches on design, development and production techniques, strategies and processes.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, communications, marketing, or an area relevant to communication outreach; relevant advanced degree preferred
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of progressively responsible experience in communications, public relations or journalism, ideally with projects on energy, conservation agriculture, forestry, natural resource management, or other related sectors
  • Excellent written and spoken English, to include the ability to write reports, press releases and other material and the ability to present orally to meetings, conferences, radio interviews etc.
  • Knowledge of the media, issues within Zambia particularly affecting alternative energy sources, conservation agriculture, forestry, or natural resource management
  • Demonstrated experience using social media to promote project successes and achieve project goals
  • Experience with international affairs/development is required; experiences with USAID or other international donors locally preferred
  • Excellent contacts within the media industry within Zambia preferred
  • Production skills to include at least one of videography, photography, radio production or web design highly preferred
  • Ability to effectively train, mentor and transfer knowledge to other staff members and interns
  • Good computer skills to include MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
