The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Zambia Country Office seeks to recruit a proficient and self-motivated individual in the position Senior Wildlife Officer to be based in Sesheke.

Context

Guided by our vision of ensuring that the environment, natural resources and biodiversity in Zambia are secured and sustainably managed for people and nature, the mission of the WWF Zambia is to lead the development and delivery of WWF Zambia’s Four Conservation Goals related to People, Wildlife, Forests and Freshwater.

Located in Zambia’s southwest corner, the Silowana Complex is a cornerstone of the five-country Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA). Comprised of Sioma Ngwezi National Park and the southern portion of West Zambezi Game Management Area, the Complex represents one of the biggest opportunities in southern Africa to improve the well-being of surrounding communities, establish eco-tourism and recover and expand wildlife populations.

WWF Zambia has been working in the Silowana Complex since 2009, and is committed to working in partnership with the local communities, the Barotse Royal Establishment, the Department for National Parks and Wildlife, Peace Parks Foundation and the private sector to find sustainable solutions and achieve a shared vision for the landscape.

Major Function

Reporting to the Project Coordinator and working in close coordination with the Landscape Manager and Wildlife Team Leader, the Senior Wildlife Officer will lead the development, execution and monitoring of wildlife management focussed activities in the Silowana Complex.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Facilitate Collaboration and Build Support for Wildlife Conservation – engage with DNPW staff, community members and the other stakeholders on a day-to-day basis to facilitate the strengthening of relationships, understanding and coordination in wildlife management.

Capacity Building – provide and/or facilitate technical inputs, accompaniment and training to Community Resource Boards and Village Action Groups in the mitigation of Human Wildlife Conflict, Habitat Management, Law Enforcement and Wildlife Monitoring.

Strengthen Wildlife Monitoring Systems – support the improvement and extension of wildlife monitoring systems ensuring that multiple stakeholders are able to contribute, share and analyse key data.

Infrastructure Development – support the planning, tendering and monitoring of (WWF supported) infrastructure development within the park (e.g. boreholes, Intensive Protective Zone, Scout facilities, Tourist Camps).

Restocking – provide coordination and operational support to the preparations, transportation and delivery of species for restocking and the monitoring the survival, dispersal, and seasonal movement of released animals.

Research – support the planning and logistical arrangements and coordination of applied research and /or monitoring activities, including species counts, habitat monitoring, aerial surveys, collaring and transect counts.

Wildlife Habitat Management – support and coordinate implementation of wildlife habitat management activities such as fire management, corridor management, etc

Reporting – Provide regularised updates to both the Landscape Manager and Wildlife Team Leader on the progress of activities and contribute to the development of the programme by sharing observations, providing recommendations and foresight.

Working Relationships

Internal: Interacts regularly with other WWF Zambia Country Office project staff at the Sesheke Project Office. Maintains close communication with the Wildlife Team and Forest Team Leader based in Lusaka and the Landscape Manager.

External: Interacts with government departments at district level such as Department of National Parks & Wildlife, Forestry Department, Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock amongst others, as well as conservation and development NGOs and FBOs, community based organizations and local district councils.

Profile

Qualifications

  • Minimum First Degree or Advanced Diploma in Wildlife Management /Natural Resources Management; or equivalent professional experience.

Experience

  • At least 3 years field experience of working in wildlife conservation (planning, delivering and monitoring activities).
  • Experience with CBNRM programmes and/or working with communities.
  • Experience with stakeholder engagement in Zambia would be a strong asset.

Knowledge

  • Strong knowledge of wildlife management operations and community development would be an advantage.
  • A good understanding of wildlife research techniques, protected area management, wildlife law enforcement, or wildlife monitoring systems would be an advantage.

Skills and Competencies

  • Valid driver’s licence with three year’s driving experience
  • Good communication skills in English – including writing, speaking and listening.
  • Speaking Lozi would be a strong asset.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with an ability to moderate and facilitate conflict resolution.
  • Must be a self-motivated individual who can self-organise and work with others
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines, high pressure situations.
  • Good financial planning and management skills.
